art
bookshop

Limestone Books sells art books, with a particular focus on non-Western perspectives and underrepresented voices. It was founded in 2022 in Maastricht, The Netherlands, by a curatorial collective consisting of Jhen Chen, Liang-Kai Yu, Emily Shin-Jie Lee, HSIEH I Hsuan, and Chang YuHsin. We envision ourselves as a bookshop, but not in the traditional profit-driven sense. Instead, we view the economic perspective as a focal point where we can foster radical experimentation within the art publishing sphere.

Limestone Books collaborates with the Jan Van Eyck Academie, managing their webshop and book sales.

community
space

Limestone Books collaborates with international artists, designers, cultural workers, and local communities. We organize events that span from weekly reading groups and artist talks to longer projects such as Artist Takeovers of the Bookshop. We view it as an experimental space where anything can unfold. Through daily engagement with people and communities, the space truly serves as a bridge between art/design and the public.

publisher

Rather than seeing publishing as producing books, we strive to harness PUBLISHING as an active force—a means of disseminating information, a strategy for decolonizing the global capitalist model of knowledge production, and a pathway for learning from diverse cultures. While we are selling books, our approach to book selection will be entirely different from that of a commercial bookshop. This is because we perceive the act of designing—publishing—distributing books as integral aspects of our artistic practice.

Our Publishing Titles

library

In 2023, Limestone Books renovated a space and invited various groups and collectives to each contribute 20 books. These were amalgamated with our existing archives to establish a collective library. This library offers membership to neighbourhood residents, enabling them to borrow books. The book collection is changing overtime and shaped by the local communities. The collection evolves over time, influenced by the local communities. Additionally, it includes a dedicated shelf for artist's books by local artists.
